Holi

I haven't yet come to my month-long study of Hinduism, but when our friends Chandana and Heman invited us to celebrate the spring festival of colors, Holi, we couldn't wait to join them!

We toured the Hindu temple, and Heman taught me about all the different idols, which are very similar to Christian saints in that they each are different representations, or manifestations, of specific aspects of the One God. In fact, I learned that Hinduism has a Holy Trinity - a Creator, Sustainer and Destroyer.

We then went to the common area where a massive crowd had gathered to sample foods from all over India. I had a wonderful plate of lentils and a sort of fried dumpling with bean filling and sweet dipping sauces.

After some cultural dances, everyone filed outside for the main event - the raucous color wars, symbolizing the victory of good over evil, and the purifying of the soul through the new life of spring. We picked up our dry powders of brilliant hues, and joined in sprinkling blessings upon everyone - friends and strangers alike. What a celebration!

Holi Moli!

Thank you Heman!
Thank you Chandana!
Happy Holi!
